FAQ

  • What type of photography do you specialize in?

I specialize in production photography for a variety of performances, including Off-Off Broadway, Off Broadway, Broadway shows, large-scale opera productions, and experimental theater and dance. I also create promotional photography both in studio and on location, that I art direct and produce for performances, theater, and dance companies. Additionally, I shoot film portraits.

  • How do you approach photographing live performances and portraits?

For live shows, I use a discreet, intuitive approach—anticipating key moments and working with available light to preserve the atmosphere of the performance.

During portrait sessions, I create a relaxed atmosphere, encouraging genuine expression and trust. Photographing portraits on film means there’s no instant review of images. This limitation is liberating for both of us, encouraging focus on the present moment in a judgment-free environment.

  • How do you handle challenging lighting conditions in theaters or on location?

I have extensive experience shooting in low light and dynamic environments, such as theaters and on-location settings. I use high-quality equipment and creative techniques to ensure images are sharp, vibrant, and true to the atmosphere of the performance. In addition, I am skilled in using studio lighting and advanced lighting techniques, and I am able to bring artificial lights—including battery-operated options—to any location, ensuring flexibility and optimal results regardless of the available natural or ambient light.

  • Do you offer image retouching and editing?

Yes. All final images are edited for color, exposure, and composition. Additional retouching or creative direction can be provided depending on the project.

  • What is the booking process, and how far in advance should I schedule?

To secure your session, simply reach out via info@mariabaranova.com with details about your project. I recommend booking at least 2–4 weeks in advance, or earlier. However, feel free to reach out last minute, I might have an open night for your project.

  • Where are you based, and are you available to travel?

I am based in New York City and am available to travel for assignments both nationally and internationally.
